Programmed as part of the Harmonium of Texas’ inaugural season and a spectacular celebration honoring the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death, Symphony No. 9 stands as one of the greatest achievements in Western music, culminating in the groundbreaking finale that introduces voices into the symphonic form. Setting Friedrich Schiller’s Ode to Joy, the choral movement proclaims a stirring vision of universal brotherhood, hope, and the triumph of the human spirit.
